Nalu lives with Ruben, her father, in a small country town near the Brazilian border with Uruguay. When Ruben realizes that his daughter is becoming a woman, an ambiguous closeness begins to develop between them.
An 11-year-old street boy, Obdulio, who sells newspapers for a living but cannot read or write, finds a magical "Maestro" in the night watchman of the newspaper's office. Obdulio's charismatic mentor not only introduces him to the world of literacy but also teaches him the real meaning of life through the lyrics of the "Murgas" [Carnival Pierrots] during the magical nights of the irreverent and provocative Uruguayan Carnival.
The future has arrived. Below, in the tunnels, inhabit the "underground": a tribe that survives on the fringes. Above, amidst decay and smog, a corrupt society is ravaged by a religious cult that kidnaps and murders beautiful teenage models. Detective Gutiérrez, tormented in dreams by the image of a young woman whom he has never met, is hired by a wealthy family to find a missing model. Tangled between these two worlds, Gutiérrez will have to push himself to his breaking point to solve the enigma.
